PC Not Responding? How to Stop Computer Lockups and Freezes

!±8± PC Not Responding? How to Stop Computer Lockups and Freezes

Tired of lockups, freezes, blue screens, and your PC not responding? The first thing you'll want to do is research exactly why you're having computer trouble.

Sometimes programs and viruses can cause lockups. Other times, it might be hardware. Whatever the cause may be, follow this troubleshooting and maintenance advice to find out exactly why your computer freezes and how you can fix it.

Defragmenting Your Hard Drive

If a computer goes a sufficiently long time without being defragged, then it may become noticeably slow or even lock up.

When you download, install, and even uninstall multiple programs over time, useless file fragments build up in your hard drive and your registry. These fragments create "dead space" on your computer, which eats up processing power and necessary resources.

What you'll want to do is boot into Safe Mode. Safe Mode is a boot option that only loads the very minimum settings and programs that Windows needs to run.

Then you'll need to go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter.

Be certain that you have a stable power supply, because any interruption in the process can seriously damage your files and hard drive.

Adware, Malware, Spyware, Trojans, Worms, and Viruses

All of these things are extremely bad for your computer. They tend to overwrite, delete, and rearrange necessary system and registry files. They also cause system bloat, eating up your memory and your processing speed and power.

Because of how viruses interrupt your necessary system resources, they slow down and lock up your computer (or worse!).

Check to be certain that you are not infected by these malicious programs by performing a deep system scan with a reliable and updated antivirus program.

Be sure to boot into Safe Mode and keep a high security firewall up at all times, or else you might accidentally reinfect your PC.

Registry Scanners and Cleaners

Your registry is the nuts and bolts of your entire system. It stores your settings, crucial system files, and various other scattered bits of program information.

Your registry can be a very vulnerable part of your system if it is not properly maintained. Many viruses and malicious Trojans use the registry as a backdoor to gain access and control of your system.

For further research, you can download a registry cleaner if your PC is not responding properly, or if you just want to protect yourself from future critical errors on your computer.
